‘Levrier’ is French for greyhound, and Jo Irvine has looked after retired racing greyhounds for 20 years. Jo is also enjoying a second lease on life. At 35 she gave up her nursing career, working vintages in the US whilst earning her viticulture and oenology degree before coming home to start a consulting business and make wines for her father, Jim Irvine, at Irvine Wines. Jim sold that business in ’14, after which Jo went out on her own, releasing the first wines under the Levrier label in ’16. The wines she makes on her own account are named for famous racing greyhounds: Sorter, Argos, Anubis and Peritas. Levrier’s cellar door is also distinctly dog friendly, with a fenced dog park for visiting hounds, and resident wine greyhounds Georgie and Daphne often on site. -HALLIDAY TEAM

As a second-generation winemaker, Jo Irvine had her career begin at a very early age, following her father around the winery, experiencing the ritual tasting of ferments and wine blending. In the early 90’s Jo pursued her enduring passion for winemaking, working six vintages in both the Barossa Valley and California USA. In 2014, Jo's dream of owning her own brand began and by late 2017 Lévrier Wines by Jo Irvine was born. Levrier, a French word meaning Greyhound, combines her love of winemaking and the advocacy she has for the greyhound breed as pets, which has been a major part of her life for over twenty years after a chance encounter many years ago with Chilli, her first greyhound. This set her on this unique journey in celebrating both famous greyhounds and quality wines.
