Our Review
First Drop Wines HQ is in the striking 'Home of the Brave' building on the southern edge of Nuriootpa in the Provenance Barossa precinct. John Retsas is the man behind the dynamic brand, with its striking wine labels and delicious wines sourced from vineyards across the Barossa, Adelaide Hills and McLaren Vale. There is a heavy emphasis on the 'alternative' (appropriate) varieties with Italian and Portuguese grape varieties making their savoury and delicious presence felt; of course, shiraz, grenache, cabernet sauvignon and mataro also play a role, with a contemporary slant. Exports to the US, Canada, the UK, Bermuda, Ireland, Sweden, Belgium, Latvia, Finland, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Ukraine, Singapore, Hong Kong, Greece, Norway, South Korea, Japan and NZ. -DAVE BROOKES
About
First Drop was born in 2004 with a desire to make wines to drink, not just appreciate. Since its inception, First Drop has been recognised and awarded for innovative winemaking and pushing the boundaries of packaging and promotion. Indeed, they led the revolution in wine packaging design in Australia, bringing personality and humour to the industry for the first time. Driven by the hugely popular ‘Mother’s Milk’ Barossa Shiraz and supported by a number of crowd-pleasing wines, the First Drop style has universal appeal. The reputation of the winery has been further reinforced by the consistent accolades bestowed across the range, including the ‘pinnacle wines’ – ‘Fat of the Land’ and ‘The Cream’ Barossa Valley Shiraz.
