Elderton

South Australia | Barossa Valley

Our Review

The founding Ashmead family, with mother Lorraine supported by sons Allister and Cameron, continues to impress with their wines. Julie Ashmead (married to Cameron and the 5th-generation winemaker at Campbells in Rutherglen) is head of production, overseeing viticulture and winemaking. Elderton has 4 vineyards across the Barossa and Eden valleys. The latter is home to the Craneford vineyard (planted to shiraz, cabernet sauvignon, riesling and chardonnay) and the Mengler Hill vineyard (purchased in 2022 from the Mattschoss family and planted to old-vine shiraz, cabernet, riesling and grenache). Elderton’s original estate vineyard in the Barossa Valley, Nuriootpa (with plantings of shiraz, cabernet sauvignon and merlot dating back to 1894), is responsible for the prized Elderton Command Shiraz. The Greenock site (planted by the Helbig family in 1915 and purchased in 2010, consisting of shiraz, grenache, carignan, mourvèdre, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay and semillon) completes the portfolio of vines. Energetic promotion and marketing in Australia and overseas are paying dividends. Elegance and balance are the keys to these wines. Exports to all major markets.

About

Elderton Wines is a small, family owned and operated winery, situated in the heart of the Barossa Valley.

The Elderton vineyard which was planted in 1894 by the Scholz Family, was purchased by the Ashmead family in 1980 and started producing labelled bottled estate wine from the 1982 harvest. It was well after a decade of hard work and toil that the winery shot to prominence in the early 1990s, after winning the prestigious Jimmy Watson Trophy at the 1993 Melbourne Wine Show.

The real strength behind the Elderton success is the ancient 72 acre Barossa floor vineyard, which produces fruit of the highest quality year in year out. Each block on the property is cherished but the two standouts are the Command Shiraz block, planted 1894, and the Ashmead Cabernet Sauvignon block, planted 1944.

The wines of Elderton are enjoyed worldwide for their amazing varietal characters and regional definition. Elderton pride themselves on quality, consistency and sustainability.
