The inspiration behind the name is clear when you find that owners Bill and Jane Shrapnel have long loved the wines of Alsace: Colmar is the main town in that region. The Shrapnels realised a long-held ambition when they purchased an established, high-altitude (980m) vineyard in May '13. Everything they have done has turned to gold: notably grafting cabernet sauvignon to pinot noir, merlot to chardonnay, and shiraz to pinot gris. The plantings are now 1.77ha of pinot noir (clones 667, 777, 115 and MV6), 1.25ha of chardonnay (clones 95, 96 and P58), 1.24ha of riesling and lesser quantities of pinot gris, gewürztraminer and the Tahbilk clone of shiraz. -JAMES HALLIDAY

After grafting less successful varieties, the plantings are now 1.77ha of pinot noir (clones 667, 777, 115 and MV6), 1.25ha of chardonnay (clones 95, 96 and P58), 1.24ha of riesling and lesser quantities of pinot gris, gewürztraminer and the early-ripening Tahbilk clone of shiraz. The Shrapnels’ daughter Sarah has now assumed marketing responsibilities for the brand.
