After 15 years in the wine trade, Simon Grant and partner Helen Murray spent several years looking for the right place to grow nebbiolo, the variety that had the greatest appeal to them. They found a site at around 600m elevation on red decomposed shale and mudstone soils just above the town of Beechworth to focus on nebbiolo. The focus paid off. The quality of wines achieved in a relatively short growing period is commendable. The home vineyard was sold in ‘23 following an on-farm accident however Simon and Helen have retained Traviarti and continue to trade. -KATRINA BUTLER
