Pooley Wines

Tasmania | Tasmania

Our Review

Pooley Wines is a glowing exemplar of a boutique Tasmanian family estate. Three generations of the family have been involved in its development, with the little hands of the 4th generation now starting to get involved. The heart of production has historically been the glorious Campania vineyard of Cooinda Vale (after which the brand was originally named), planted to 12ha of chardonnay, pinot noir, riesling and pinot grigio, with new plantings currently underway. In 2003, the family planted pinot noir and pinot grigio (and more recently chardonnay, riesling and syrah, bringing plantings to 6ha) at Belmont Vineyard near Richmond, renamed Butcher’s Hill. A cellar door was established in the heritage-listed sandstone barn and coach house of the distinguished 1830s convict-built Georgian home, standing in pride of place on the heritage property. In 2017 the family acquired the nearby 1830s Prospect House and refurbished it into a glorious private hotel. Wine quality has risen to dramatic effect, no small feat while doubling production, since the return to Tasmania of Anna Pooley and husband Justin Bubb to establish the winemaking arm of the estate in 2012. Riesling, pinot noir and chardonnay now rank among Tasmania’s finest. Conversion to organic viticulture is currently underway, with a goal of achieving certification by the 2026 vintage. Exports to the UK, the US and Sweden. -TYSON STELZER

About

Pooley Wines was established in 1985 when the late Jack ‘Denis’ and Margaret Pooley planted vines on the banks of the Coal River in southern Tasmania. Now, in the hands of their third generation, Pooley Wines seek to share exceptional, nurtured wines that express their uniqueness, ambassadorship, and dedication to renew their environment for generations to come. The expression of a sense of place is at the core of our philosophy. Our wines are enhanced primarily by our unique terroir, our commitment to sustainable viticulture, with minimal intervention winemaking. Our wines seek to personify the distinction between our two vineyards located in the Coal River Valley, Butcher’s Hill and Cooinda Vale.
