Yelland & Papps

South Australia | Barossa Valley

Our Review

Michael and Susan Papps (née Yelland) set up this venture after their marriage in 2005. It is easy for them to regard the Barossa Valley as their home because Michael has lived and worked in the wine industry in the Barossa Valley for more than 20 years. He has a rare touch, producing consistently excellent wines, but also pushing the envelope; as well as using a sustainable approach to winemaking with minimal inputs, he has not hesitated to challenge orthodox approaches to a number of aspects of conventional fermentation methods. . -JAMES HALLIDAY

About

Susan Yelland and Michael Papps started Yelland & Papps in 2005 with no ancestry of winemaking but something that had them hooked as soon as they started to work in the Wine Industry. Forging relationships with Barossa Valley growers from the start they then went on to purchase the original Hahn homestead in the Ober Langmeil (Dorrien) region of Barossa Valley in 2010, converting a vineyard property to their own winery allowing them to make all their wine onsite and themselves. All their growers’ vineyards are specific to site and varietal, with vineyards coming from the sandy soils of Vine Vale just down the road from their estate, the alluvial topsoil over clay found North at Greenock, south as far as the base of Tanunda with fractured shale and mudstone interspersed with quartz and iron stone, West as far as Marananga and the beautiful Stonewell sub region and to the East in Light Pass. In the early years Michael and Susan followed modern Australian traditions of winemaking, but gaining confidence in their style through difficult vintages, time and experimenting they found they wanted to embrace older techniques of winemaking. Starting with their own vineyard converting this to organics (not certified) in 2011 the vineyards are hand pruned by themselves and throughout the year run their Dorper Damara sheep through the vineyard to maintain. Respecting the traditions, they believe in picking on acid and flavour balance and when the vine is truly in its best condition, allowing minimal or no acid additions, and minimal doses of sulphur dioxide or none at all. With natural yeast allowing to spontaneous ferment in the winery and refusing filtration or fining on all wines, to enable a true expression of style. Michael and Susan decisions in the winery to use larger French oak vats and puncheons to enable wines to allow the fruit to be the focus and the oak to support and add structure. Wines are foremost hand crafted to be elegant with structure texture and with aging capabilities.
