Eisenstone

South Australia | Barossa Valley

Our Review

Stephen Cook called into a small local winery on a whim to ‘buy a few grapes’. Instantly hooked, he returned to SA and secured the Roseworthy graduate diploma in oenology. A vintage in California filled his wanderlust; a varied career in the Barossa Valley followed, rising steadily up the ranks. In ‘14 he decided to take a small plunge and embark on Eisenstone, its translation meaning the ironstone soil on which the early settlers planted their vineyards. He only makes single-vineyard or single-district shiraz, eschewing all other varieties. He is only interested in high-quality grapes, the use of top-quality oak, the tool to capture the message of the interaction between shiraz and its particular place. Exports to Hong Kong and Malaysia. -JAMES HALLIDAY

About

Celebrating the rich German heritage of the Barossa Valley, the name Eisenstone comes from a blend of the German word for iron - Eisen and the English - Stone. Our name celebrates the Ironstone soils in which the vines grow and the stone used by the original German settlers to build much of the famous Barossa buildings that still stand to this very day. Our aim is to establish ourselves as specialists of Barossa Valley shiraz, the icon variety of the Barossa Valley which is recognised worldwide. Within the Valley there are a number of recognised sub regions that vary in climate and soil type and bring out subtle differences in the variety. Eisenstone creator and winemaker Stephen Cook secures special parcels of grapes from the ‘western ranges’ of the famous Barossa Valley which are renowned for producing fuller bodied, powerful wines with amazing depth of flavour and exceptional aging ability to make his wines released under the Eisenstone label.
