Tupelo Vintners

South Australia | Adelaide Hills

Our Review

This is the venture of Wayne Anderson and Sue Johnson, marking a new direction for Wayne after producing the Killibinbin wines since 1997; Killibinbin continues, but is now wholly owned by Brothers in Arms. Tupelo has been headquartered in the historic Onkaparinga Woollen Mills building on the main street of Lobethal. Tupelo takes its name from Elvis Presley's birthplace, and the surreal labels are images taken by an underwater camera of a studio assistant dressed up as Elvis. It was set up in partnership with Robert Johnson, but since joined by Sam Scott of Scott Winemaking. The three are responsible for their own wines, but act as cellarhands for each other during vintage. A cellar door sales and tasting area was opened at the end of 2010 in the winery, surrounded by barrels, winemaking equipment and open red fermenters during vintage. This is perilously close to a unique atmospheric location. -JAMES HALLIDAY
