Pepperjack to release its first premium wine

By J'aime Cardillo

23 Sep, 2024

The premium single-vineyard shiraz will be available to order in mid-October.

Pepperjack will release its limited edition 2022 Single Vineyard Barossa Valley Shiraz next month. It's the first-ever premium wine from the Barossa Valley staple. A premium wine means a higher price point than you'd expect for a PJ, but Dave Brookes says it's a wine that sits at the "pointy end" of the quality spectrum.

Only 8000 bottles have been produced, and if, like us, you're keen to secure a bottle for Christmas (it even comes in a gift box), preorders for the limited-release wine will open on October 17. Be sure to put the date in your diary, because preorders will close a week later on October 23. If there's still stock available, you can order direct from Dan Murphy's from October 24.

Pepperjack's chief winemaker Richard Mattner says the newest addition to the PJ range "is more than just a bottle of wine – it’s a labour of love, a testament to the artistry and craftsmanship that defines the Pepperjack legacy."

The 2022 Single Vineyard Barossa Valley Shiraz is a blend of 95.6 per cent shiraz and 4.4 per cent cabernet sauvignon. The growing season was the wettest on record prior to 1996 (which is the same year Pepperjack was established), before a dry summer and welcomed rainfall in February. Each individual block from the vineyard was fermented separately, before being transferred to seasoned and new oak for 18 months prior to blending and bottling.

2022 Pepperjack Single Vineyard Barossa Valley Shiraz

2022 Pepperjack Single Vineyard Barossa Valley Shiraz

A single-vineyard wine from the western sub-region of Greenock. A new wine for Pepperjack and one that sits at the pointy end of their quality pyramid. Deep crimson in the glass with a core of ripe dark plum and blackberry fruits along with hints of baking spices, cedar, vanillin, dark chocolate, ironstone, black licorice, violets and earth. Full bodied with a velvety flow, compact, graphite-like tannins and a smooth, cassis-rich fan on the exit. – Dave Brookes, Halliday Wine Companion, 95 points.

RRP $100 | Drink to 2036
